Wow...this sounds like it made the kind of impression that "Alone in the Dark" had on me when it came out...I was a kid and hadn't even read Lovecraft yet, but it was such a brilliant Haunted House scenario. I'd almost play it again even though it seems totally outdated now...I've always had a weakness for haunted house scenarios (one of my favourite Lovecraft stories is "The Haunter of the Dark"). Sounds like they really made use of the concept that it is the unseen or partially seen horror that is truly terrifying.
